“The education of even a small child, therefore, does not aim at preparing him for school, but for life.”
– Maria Montessori.
OUR PRESCHOOL AT HOLLY GRANGE
We follow the Early years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and our Montessori philosophy and education fits perfectly within this framework.
Our overarching philosophy is to ‘follow the child’ and we do this by offering a carefully prepared environment which suits each cohort of preschool children and takes into account each child as a unique individual.
Within our Montessori Preschool we foster self-motivation, self-discipline and promote independence and a sense of responsibility.
We encourage children to take great pride in their achievements, however small and our environment offers space, freedom and a wide range of activities where your child will be able to choose within a culture of non-competitiveness and mutual respect.
We support all children to develop their literacy, numeracy and creative skills through our wide range of Montessori materials which children are free to choose, supported by our trained and qualified preschool teachers. We build on their cultural awareness through our strong links with the local schools and their sense of community is fostered through regular trips and visits to the local area.
Our overall aim is that when children leave our setting to go to school not only are they ready for their next stage of learning but they are also full of self-esteem, confidence and with high levels of wellbeing. We see their personal and social development just as important as their academic achievements and through our philosophy of ‘Time, Trust, Respect’ we strive to ensure their time at Holly Grange Montessori provides the foundations for a happy, emotionally secure and responsible citizen of the future.
We offer regular PE lessons, preparing children for school by the introduction of a PE kit, weekly Spanish lessons, Eco-Warriors, Yoga and Forest school sessions in our nursery forest area. We also have ‘homework bags’ and ‘parent bags’ which give children and parents the opportunity to continue learning at home.
Maria Montessori said that “play is the work of children” and she coined the term ‘Work Cycle’ which has which has stayed with us for over a hundred years! During this time children are able to explore our carefully prepared environment and engage with materials and activities of their own choosing. The time provides children with the opportunities to enjoy the work they love, while also developing a range of valuable life skills. In addition, our work cycle motivates children to choose activities which focus on mathematics, literacy, culture along with a range of other subjects in order to prepare them for school.
“Children are exceptionally well supported during transitions between rooms and their eventual move to school. Superb partnerships with local schools mean that children are extremely well prepared for the next stage in their learning.”
